Maturity Lesson 5. Break the wall of favoritism

James 2:1-13

My brothers and sisters, believers in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ must not show favoritism.

Suppose a man comes into your meeting wearing a gold ring and fine clothes, and a poor man in filthy old clothes also comes in.

If you show special attention to the man wearing fine clothes and say, “Here’s a good seat for you,” but say to the poor man, “You stand there” or “Sit on the floor by my feet,”

have you not discriminated among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts?

Listen, my dear brothers and sisters: Has not God chosen those who are poor in the eyes of the world to be rich in faith and to inherit the kingdom he promised those who love him?

But you have dishonored the poor. Is it not the rich who are exploiting you? Are they not the ones who are dragging you into court?

Are they not the ones who are blaspheming the noble name of him to whom you belong?

If you really keep the royal law found in Scripture, “Love your neighbor as yourself,” you are doing right.

But if you show favoritism, you sin and are convicted by the law as lawbreakers.

10 For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it.

11 For he who said, “You shall not commit adultery,” also said, “You shall not murder.” If you do not commit adultery but do commit murder, you have become a lawbreaker.

12 Speak and act as those who are going to be judged by the law that gives freedom,

13 because judgment without mercy will be shown to anyone who has not been merciful. Mercy triumphs over judgment.

Connect:

We all experience a discrimination and favoritism.  How did you feel when you realized that you are discriminated?  On the other hand, have you discriminated others?  The discrimination is something we all experience regardless our race, color, economic stature, age, how we look.  This is what we see generation after generation.  Then, how should we live in the age of discrimination?

Hear:

(1) James is pointing out the issues related to the favoritism in the early churches.  How did the early Christians show their favoritism (verses 1-4)?  What kind of people were these wealthy being treated well (verses 6-7)?

(2) What reason does James give for favoring some people over others?  (verses 5-6, 8-13)

(3) Even though they were people of faith and the law, the early Christians treated the wealthy well while neglecting the poor.  What does the existence of such discriminations among the early Christians mean?

(4) James shows the stark contrast between how God treats people and how the Christians treat others.  He also points out that it’s foolish to treat the wealthy well.  Why is James giving so much emphasis on the issue of favoritism?

Reflect:

(5) How do I normally treat others? James says that God’s judgment without mercy will be shown to anyone who is not merciful.  How should we reflect such lesson in our lives?

Implement:

(6) It’s a sin to discriminate the poor and the week even though we claim to be Christian who lives by His word.  Then, how could we live our lives as pure and genuine Christians by treating all our neighbors with love without any favoritism?

Division has done more to hide Christ from the view of men than all the infidelity that has ever been spoken.  – George Macdonald --
