Touch Lesson 12. Treasure in the trial.

Genesis 45:1-15

Then Joseph could no longer control himself before all his attendants, and he cried out, “Have everyone leave my presence!” So there was no one with Joseph when he made himself known to his brothers.

And he wept so loudly that the Egyptians heard him, and Pharaoh’s household heard about it.

Joseph said to his brothers, “I am Joseph! Is my father still living?” But his brothers were not able to answer him, because they were terrified at his presence.

Then Joseph said to his brothers, “Come close to me.” When they had done so, he said, “I am your brother Joseph, the one you sold into Egypt!

And now, do not be distressed and do not be angry with yourselves for selling me here, because it was to save lives that God sent me ahead of you.

For two years now there has been famine in the land, and for the next five years there will be no plowing and reaping.

But God sent me ahead of you to preserve for you a remnant on earth and to save your lives by a great deliverance.

“So then, it was not you who sent me here, but God. He made me father to Pharaoh, lord of his entire household and ruler of all Egypt.

Now hurry back to my father and say to him, ‘This is what your son Joseph says: God has made me lord of all Egypt. Come down to me; don’t delay.

10 You shall live in the region of Goshen and be near me—you, your children and grandchildren, your flocks and herds, and all you have.

11 I will provide for you there, because five years of famine are still to come. Otherwise you and your household and all who belong to you will become destitute.’

12 “You can see for yourselves, and so can my brother Benjamin, that it is really I who am speaking to you.

13 Tell my father about all the honor accorded me in Egypt and about everything you have seen. And bring my father down here quickly.”

14 Then he threw his arms around his brother Benjamin and wept, and Benjamin embraced him, weeping. 15 And he kissed all his brothers and wept over them. Afterward his brothers talked with him.

Connect:

When the young Joseph left his loving father’s protection and sold off to Egypt as a slave, there was no one there to help him.  When he was wrongly accused and put into a prison, no one tried to argue for his innocence to get him released.  In his trials, he had no one to share his sorrow or plead his innocence.  When he saw his brothers, who sold him off to Egypt, his heart was filled with love and forgiveness instead of the hatred as one might expect.  Through Joseph’s life, the bible teaches the benefit and the value of the hardships that we might encounter in our lives.

Hear:

(1) Joseph finally reveals his true identity to his brothers.  How does the bible record this process?  (verses 1-8)

(2) What did Joseph promise to his brothers after asking them to bring his father Jacob from his homeland (verses 9-11)?  How does Joseph express his heart toward them (verses 12-15)?

(3) A boy who was sold as a slave in Egypt as a result of his brothers’ jealousy was facing the same brothers before him as a highest official of Egypt.  These were the very brothers who caused so much pain and suffering in Joseph’s life.  However, we see that Joseph kissed each of the brothers and embraced them.  What does Joseph’s action mean?

(4) It’s quite common for the pain and suffering to make a permanent scar in one’s heart.  However, Joseph’s heart was filled with forgiveness and love instead of anger and vengeance.  How was Joseph able to show such love instead of anger to his brothers?

Reflect:

(5) What can we learn from Joseph who was able to find the new meaning of his suffering by thinking about God who allowed such time instead of remaining in the pain and despair?  How is Joseph challenging us by embracing his brothers with love?

Implement:

(6) Have we ever blamed others when we were going through the trials and tribulations that were somehow allowed in our lives?  What are some changes needed in us in order to react like Joseph when we find ourselves in the similar situations as Joseph?
