Faith Lesson 11. Faith that conquers Jericho

Hebrews 11:30

By faith the walls of Jericho fell down after they had been encircled for seven days.

Connect:

The Israelites went into the land of Canaan after going through the wilderness.  Their first accomplishment in their occupation of Canaan was the fall of Jericho which was supposed to be unconquerable.  It would have been impossible to conquer Jericho by their military forces alone.  However, they were successful by their faith alone, and this story is a challenge for our faith.  The Jericho then is many difficult issues we face daily such as relational issued, drug problems and sinful nature within us among others.  How are you conquering the unconquerable Jericho in your life?

Hear:

(1) When they faced Jericho in the promised land, God commanded the Israelites to do something that made no sense.  What was this command?

Joshua 5:2-3

At that time the Lord said to Joshua, “Make flint knives and circumcise the Israelites again.”

So Joshua made flint knives and circumcised the Israelites at Gibeath Haaraloth.

Joshua 6:2-5

Then the Lord said to Joshua, “See, I have delivered Jericho into your hands, along with its king and its fighting men.

March around the city once with all the armed men. Do this for six days.

Have seven priests carry trumpets of rams’ horns in front of the ark. On the seventh day, march around the city seven times, with the priests blowing the trumpets.

When you hear them sound a long blast on the trumpets, have the whole army give a loud shout; then the wall of the city will collapse and the army will go up, everyone straight in.”

(2) What happened to the Jericho when they obeyed God’s command even though it did not make any sense to them?  What was required from the people of Israel for this to happen?  (verse 30)

Reflect:

(3) What was the meaning of God’s command prior to the battle for Jericho?

(4) The weapon that the Israelites used was not knife but their obedience to God’s command.  Why did God chose a battle of obedience instead of a battle of knife for their very first war in the promised land?  Who was the most dangerous enemy that stood before the Israelites as they were standing in front of Jericho?  Why did Jericho fall by the trumpet blasts instead by the knives?

(5) The victory was already decided before the Israelites took the action.  That was the punishment of Jericho.  The battle was not a fight for a victory but an occupation to declare the victory.  The Israelites could declare the victory, because they conquered their hearts by depending God alone.  How do you feel as you apply this principle in your life?

Implement:

(6)  What are some areas in our lives that are impossible to conquer like Jericho was to the Israelites?  What are some commitments that you need to make as you seek to declare the victory by obeying God’s words?

Prayers for all nations:

Think:

It might be good if we stop using the terms ‘victory’ and ‘defeat’ to describe our progress in holiness.  Rather, we should use the terms ‘obedience’ and ‘disobedience’.  -Jerry Bridges-
