Lesson 9. Faith that blossoms in the wilderness

Hebrews 11:27-28

27 By faith he left Egypt, not fearing the king’s anger; he persevered because he saw him who is invisible.

28 By faith he kept the Passover and the application of blood, so that the destroyer of the firstborn would not touch the firstborn of Israel.

Connect:

We live in this world that is like a wilderness.  There are so many issues and problems that we just cannot resolve on our own.  Sometimes we feel the burden in just day to day living.  However, God wants us to continue to live in this wilderness.  The life in wilderness is not the live of abandon.  The place itself may not be a blessing, but it could be a place of blessing where we can meet God.  Then, the life in the wilderness can be a blessing instead of a curse.  Then, how can we recognize the blessing?  How did Moses’ faith blossomed in the wilderness instead of being in despair?

Hear:

(1) What was his condition like as Moses was leaving Egypt?  How was he able to endure through all the difficulties?  (verse 27)

(2) Why did Moses start the observation of the Passover and the application of blood?  (verse 28)

(3) What does it mean for Moses to leave Egypt without the fear of the Egyptian Pharaoh?  (verses 27-28)

Exodus 2:11-12

11 One day, after Moses had grown up, he went out to where his own people were and watched them at their hard labor. He saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew, one of his own people.

12 Looking this way and that and seeing no one, he killed the Egyptian and hid him in the sand.

Exodus 12:1-14

1The Lord said to Moses and Aaron in Egypt,

“This month is to be for you the first month, the first month of your year.

Tell the whole community of Israel that on the tenth day of this month each man is to take a lamb for his family, one for each household.

If any household is too small for a whole lamb, they must share one with their nearest neighbor, having taken into account the number of people there are. You are to determine the amount of lamb needed in accordance with what each person will eat.

The animals you choose must be year-old males without defect, and you may take them from the sheep or the goats.

Take care of them until the fourteenth day of the month, when all the members of the community of Israel must slaughter them at twilight.

Then they are to take some of the blood and put it on the sides and tops of the doorframes of the houses where they eat the lambs.

That same night they are to eat the meat roasted over the fire, along with bitter herbs, and bread made without yeast.

Do not eat the meat raw or boiled in water, but roast it over a fire—with the head, legs and internal organs.

10 Do not leave any of it till morning; if some is left till morning, you must burn it.

11 This is how you are to eat it: with your cloak tucked into your belt, your sandals on your feet and your staff in your hand. Eat it in haste; it is the Lord’s Passover.

12 “On that same night I will pass through Egypt and strike down every firstborn of both people and animals, and I will bring judgment on all the gods of Egypt. I am the Lord.

13 The blood will be a sign for you on the houses where you are, and when I see the blood, I will pass over you. No destructive plague will touch you when I strike Egypt.

14 “This is a day you are to commemorate; for the generations to come you shall celebrate it as a festival to the Lord—a lasting ordinance.

(4) Moses depicted in today’s passage shows how we must show our faith in the wilderness.  Why is the bible emphasizing that he left without fearing the king’s anger (verse 27), and he kept the Passover and the application of blood during the 40 years in the wilderness (verse 28)?

Reflect:

(5) Charles Spurgeon reflected, “I often look back when I was in the hospital with a heart of gratitude.  I can surely confirm that I grew more in the sickbed than any other place.”  The wilderness is a harsh and difficult place, but it can be a place where one can experience God’s special grace.  What do you think as you look at Moses who lived through the wilderness in complete trust of God?

Implement:

(6) Where in our lives should we look for the invisible God?  In what aspect of our lives, should we keep the Passover in faith? What decisions should we make in order to see our faith blossom in the wilderness?

“Faith does not operate in the realm of the possible.  There is no glory for God in that which is humanly possible.  Faith begins where man’s power ends.”  George Muller
